Measuring Matters

"Measurement is fabulous. Unless you're busy measuring what's easy to measure as opposed to what's important." - Seth Godin.   In art, sales are important.  The size of your prospective client list is important.  The number of newsletters and post cards you send is important.  Your conversations and relationships with your fans are important.  The quality of your art is important.  Even the quantity of works you produce is important.   Your website traffic is less important.  Your search engine ranking is less important.  The number of retweets and repins you get is less important.   "What gets measured gets done." the old saying goes.   What's getting done [...]

How I Created The Blog Layout Test Page

This post:  http://clintavo.com/blog/61556/blog-layout-tests  *should* be wrapping text around images without tables.  In my tests it worked both in desktop and mobile versions of this site.   Here's how I did it:   If you want to try a non-table layout, (which is something we're still developing and testing for our Generation 3 and up templates).  The instructions are below. I am planning a better blog post on this subject. The blog post linked to at the top  was created using the instructions below. If you're not using a Generation 3 template, then it should work if you add the following css in your Site Design Center -> [...]

You're the Rock Star

Imagine being on a list of "insiders" for your favorite rock star or musician.   Said rock star emails you about new songs, sends you invitations to private events, sends you back stage passes, and invites you to get new music, tickets or merchandise before anyone else. [1]  In fact, this rock star even responds to you via email and blog post comments (and even by phone if you're a really good customer).     How cool would that be?That's who you are to your followers.   You're the Rock Star.   And you should be doing the things I described above.   If you didn't know that....well, now you do.   Sincerely,   Clint [...]

Can these 10 Ideas Get You More Sex while Making You Rich?

[Begin Sarcasm]   Top 10 best ways to write "new media best practices  guru" blog posts that will make you rich, famous and attractive!   1.  Use Numbered Lists for everything, always.  Always, always write articles in the form of a numbered list because, hey, other people online have found that it works best.  For extra points, make sure numbered lists are all you ever post to your blog.  Everyone knows that people scan online and don't actually read.  And, be sure to call your list the "top X" things about your topic, especially if you don't have any real proof that your suggestions actually [...]

Counterintuitive Art Branding Lesson from Coca-Cola

Artists are often told that they need to pay attention to their "branding."    The advice generally goes something like this, "it's important to be consistent in your marketing.  Your website, business cards, letterhead, postcards should all match in color and style, and be recognizable, blah, blah, blah, blah".  I sometimes wonder if people who give this advice have ever sold a work of art in their lives.   Then, during this advice-giving, somebody inevitably points out that Coca-Cola does all these things and is the "worlds most recognized brand."   Let's look at that a bit closer, shall we?     OK, I'll grant you Coke does make an [...]

How Do You Keep Going?

My beloved cat of nearly 19 years, Hermes, died on Monday.   The hole in my heart is huge.  There's no color in the world.  I feel like a robot programmed to "get up, make breakfast, do work, make dinner, go to sleep, repeat."      The thing is, if I feel this way from losing my pet, how do people deal with losing a spouse?  It's a double-edged sword.  If I went first, then I wouldn't have to deal with the pain of losing my spouse.  But I don't wish the pain on her either.  So it's inevitable for one of us.   How do you [...]

Hermes 1995 - 2013

He rested his head on my hand, while my other hand gently held his paw.  I whispered "I love you" into his little ear.   I was helping Hermes' mother, Purrsephanie give birth to him and his four siblings.  There was Hera, the "fat, fluffy" one.  Lillian the "little, demure" one.  Champ, the runt.  And then there were Phillip and Hermes who, as kittens looked virtually identical.  We could tell them apart because Phillip had one ring on his little tail, while Hermes had two rings.   Soon, however, another difference between the two showed up.  Phillip was easy going and  laid back, while Hermes [...]
